VSPRS
Alain Platel at the Théâtre de la Ville
until October 27th, 2007

For 20 years, Alain Platel and the Ballets C. de la B group, which he has founded, have been telling us about a world - our world - with a dance style that has a unique evocative power.

"vsprs" shows all of Alain Platel's art, both theatrical and musical, and brings together a deeply committed team. Everyone – dancers, circus artists or musicians from the Aka Moon and the Oltremontano ensembles conducted by Fabrizio Cassol – contributes to turn "vsprs" into a most remarkable experience which shows no compassion but nonetheless displays a strong faith in mankind.
Choreographed on "Vespers of the Blessed Virgin" by Monteverdi, Platel’s opera of bodies not only tells us about suffering and otherness, but also about religion the better to be wary of it. Each scene follows the other without interruption and with a striking impetus. Alain Platel - a style inventor if ever there was one - takes us beyond Monteverdi's mysteries. His committed dance style mirrors a wrecked era; it is unsettling as much as it is soothing. He can't be thanked enough for that.
